Oct 14, 2011: I’m back!

Good morning everyone,

Well, I had a headache and went straight to bed after getting home yesterday. It might be considered a way to delaying writing this blog, I guess.

Yesterday was a great day. My English class was cancelled and it gave me a chance to talk with a cute classmate on the way to library. I had a perfect 100 on my Art exam as well. The experiment with Cab was not as successful as we had expected, but it gave us a great converstation about enhancing the product. He is a genius because he talked about stuffs that I have no ideas. LOL. I had a presentation about my product in the meeting of my team, and I did it perfectly.  I had never felt so confident to like yesterday. There was another cute girl joining us this time. Haha.

I feel like a little business man now. I just figured out a way to make money for my and Cab’s dream project: to build solar panel in USF. Next week, I have a Networking Event and the week later I will present my idea to our Business Advisor Board. Cool!

However, I must not stray too much out of my studying. I want to go to Honor College next year so I need to maintain my A status. Hopefully I can make it.

MSFoundation has not replied my letter yet. I am still waiting.

About the procrastination process, I start doubting its effect. The to-do list works out just as any to-do list for me. I don’t feel hurried these days. Today I have a deadline for my computer homework but I just don’t want to submit it too late.

Yesterday:

1. Review my Physics
✔ 2. Work out my project’s plan
✔ 3. Write a letter to LV
✘ 4. Finish my Computer lesson
✔ 5. Do experiment with Cab
✔ 6. Check for subcription to Wall Street Journal/ Economics or Financial Times (one thing in my Stanford strategy)
✔ 7. Take a look at Toastmaster
✔ 8. Print the poems

Today:

1. Review my Physics
2. Read poetry
3. Finish and submit Computer homework
4. Check for English Draft 1 feedback
5. Write an article for MKISA
6. Take a look at the Forest Camp
7. Buy E birthday gifts (today is his 2nd birthday… Hurrah!)
8.Running
9. Do some houseworks

Have a good day all,

Ryan :)

Oct 13, 2011: Another Lazy Day

Hi there,

Today I finally sent the letter to MS Foundation asking for collaboration on a very interesting project, hoping they will reply soon because I don’t want to miss this opportunity. Tomorrow me and my friend Cab will test the concept of this experiment. If we have it, we will have the power to make a significant difference in lives the needy in many countries. I desire for success this time because success breeds success. Once rich, you will be richer! Hahaha.

Another intersting thing was to watch Zeitgeist Young Minds winners talk about their achievements. I was dazzled by those minds. I know people change the world in many different ways, such as Mark Zuckerberg creates Facebook and makes me waste my time everyday. Ironically, I just subcribed in today.

I had an interesting conversation with my friend T., the person who brought me into SIFE. I asked her if I am cocky in her eyes and she said no. I am just overconfident, not cocky. Haha. Ambitious was the word she used. And yes, I am ambitious. I want to turn my SIFE team into the most competitive organization at USF someday, and I am on the way of preparing and learning from my great teammates. I even think of forming a team call Freshman Superstars, consisting of the best students of Class of 2015, and bring them to my SIFE. I am considering that option.

About my procrastination process, I did procrastinate a lot today. Things were done but I did not feel the motivation. I think my problem is my concentration, not the procrastination habits. After this week, I may take a look at my philosophy and try to figure out another way to improve my to-do list. But keep in touch, I will make it work.

Today:

✘ 1. Read some pages of How to Win Friends and Influence People (this book is labled Just Arrived in USF Bookstore and I have a free copy. LOL)
✔ 2. Study for Computer test
✔ 3. Do Physics homeworks
✔ 4. Read poems for Humanities class
✔ 5. Keep proofreading my letter
✔ 6. Running
✔ 7. Do houseworks
✔ 8. Check FB and email
✔ 9. Brush my teeth
✔ 10. Get up

Tomorrow is my school day so I just have quite a few thing to do.

1. Review my Physics
2. Work out my project’s plan
3. Write a letter to LV
4. Finish my Computer lesson
5. Do experiment with Cab
6. Check for subcription to Wall Street Journal/ Economics or Financial Times (one thing in my Stanford strategy)
7. Take a look at Toastmaster
8. Print the poems

That’s all I can think of. I miss Starbuck and will definitely get one tomorrow!

Night,

Ryan.

Oct 12, 2011: Argh… I just ate at midnight!

Howdy partner,

I just ate a bowl of noodle at 1 A.M. Weight forgives me, I knew it is terrible but I was damn hungry. However, the (Tempura Udon) noodle was not very good so I won’t try it next time. Good for me now!

Bloody Tuesday makes me staying up until 2 A.M. I find that without a clear deadline, my procrastinational motivation did not work very well. Although I finished everything on my list, it was done in a slow pace. Hmmm… Tomorrow will be better because I have tons of thing to do this week, especially with my incoming computer test.

Today:

✘ 1. Start on my Computer lesson
✔ 2. Keep proofreading my letter
✔ 3. Read The Metaphorsis on Cliffnote (now I can’t bear this sleepy novel anymore)
✔ 4. Meet A at Marshall Center
✔ 5. Finish Physics review
✔ 6.  Set up study group for incoming Physics test
✔ 7. Do physics homeworks
✔ 8. Return Rich Dad, Poor Dad. (I have an audio version here. Great book! Recommended)
✔ 9. Prepare my meals
✔ 10. Check mail

Trying to be funny but nothing can come out of my head. Sorry for my boredom. I am stuffed with lots of thinking at this moment.

Good night buddies,

Ryan.

p/s: The reason I am writing my blog later than usual was I procrastinate by making my next 4 years plan. Gosh, I have always dreamed for Stanford and I know where I am going. It is a tough path but I will make it.

Oct 11, 2011: On the Beach

Hi there,

My first day of experiment was almost successful. In the morning I did the bottom four in just 1 hour. This method seems to be very effective.

Then came the funny phase. I had the invitation to go to the beach when I was doing my Physics. Tormented by the guilty feeling of saying No, I say Yes.

I downloaded an audio version of The Metamorphosis with the good intention of listening to it on the way. EPIC FAIL! I actually tried it 3 times and fell asleep everytime I heard Mr.What-his-name’s monotonous sleepy voice. Definitely he is an expert in sleeping difficulties. Instead listening to the book, I watched a Youtube video called “Don’t talk to cop”. The speaker is so cool. Yup, “People are stupid.” Check it out here and see how stupid we are. LOL

However, I did finish half of my Physics homework. We are learning about Rotational Motion, which I had learned already. I know I have to do it now but I decide to procrastinate until tomorrow. It’s late now.

About my research paper, it was about all the effectiveness of Structured Procrastination. Can’t believe it! Here is the story:

I got home at 8:45pm and I was so nervous of passing the deadline which is midnight. In my anxiety, I decide to help my aunt with loading stuffs and dumping the trash. In 30 minutes, I did not only do these things, but also tidy the house, take a bath and finish my dinner. I got back to my room at 9:15 and finish my paper after 2 hours. The thing is I felt like Fast and Furious. LOL. I rushed for everything but did it perfectly. Hopefully I will  get a good grade on this.

Tomorrow is my school day. Everything will be fun. I have a meeting with a member in my Marketing team. I am thinking about if I should stay at school late and go to a meeting of Toastmaster and learn how to “toast” people. Just kidding. But literally it seems true because that organization is about public speaking, which has the ability to put people on heat.

So, today:

✘ 1. Keep proofreading my letter
✔ 2. Finish my research paper
✘ 3. Do physics homeworks
✘ 4. Read The Metaphorsis (finish chap 2)
✔ 5.  Running (instead of running, I went to the beach – so it counts >:) )
✔ 6. Clean my room
✔ 7. Help Aunt with houseworks
✔ 8. Check email for job interview response.
✔ 9. Check Facebook

Here is for tomorrow:

1. Start on my Computer lesson
2. Keep proofreading my letter
3. Read The Metaphorsis on Cliffnote (now I can’t bear this sleepy novel anymore)
4. Meet A at Marshall Center
5. Finish Physics review
6.  Set up study group for incoming Physics test
7. Do physics homeworks
8. Return Rich Dad, Poor Dad. (I have an audio version here. Great book! Recommended)
9. Prepare my meals
10. Check mail

Ok it’s 1:29 AM.

Good night guys,

Ryan.

Oct 10, 2011: First Day of Procrastination

Welcome back,

Today I start the first day of my little self-experiment. It is 12:46 am now and I suppose to continue writing my paper than writing this blog. Actually, I am stuck in the middle of my words, wondering if I should change the title from “The Benefits of Structured Procrastination” to “Arguments on the Positive Effects of Procrastination to College Students” or something more specific. I wanted to write about structured procrastination but after reading Dr.Timothy Pychyl’s blog, I found that Delay and procrastination are not the same thing. Well, I should wait for the last hour and let my brain to the work. *sigh*

The delay of this paper is a production of my procrastination all this afternoon. I talked to an interesting girl instead of writing it. However, I think I was not wasting my time because it was a structured procrastination then. :)

Here is my to-do list for tomorrow, orderd by importance of tasks:

1. Keep proofreading my letter
2. Finish my research paper
3. Do physics homeworks
4. Read The Metaphorsis (finish chap 2)
5.  Running
6. Clean my room
7. Help Aunt with houseworks
8. Check email for job interview response.
9. Check Facebook :x

Gotta sleep now. I need to learn to sleep on time to preserve my beauty. Haha

Night everyone :)

Ryan.

Oct 9, 2011: Some Introduction

Welcome to my world,

I am Ryan, 18 years old, first year in college, still single, and for sure I am a procrastinator.

How can a person not be a procrastinator when he keeps delaying writing his research paper, which is also about procrastination, for almost a week?

Yup. I have the tendency for procrastinating tasks and I am even infamous for that silly personality. Teachers knew me for being late in their classes, supervisors got tired of writing my name in their blacklist. In highschool, 5 over 6 days I came to school late no matter how far it is from my house. Thanks to God, I still could graduate and finally came to college in another country.

First year in college, 4 classes per week is not a big deal for me. I still have lots of free time to procrastinate myself. On my first paper, I spent almost 8 hours to write only half of it and 30 minutes to fininsh the rest just before deadline. It happened again in my online computer class, I put my lesson off until the last day I had to swallow the knowledge in 2 weeks as well as did the quiz at the end.

Sometimes I think that I just wowed myself. How could I procrastinate my study and still got 3 A’s and a B+ in four classes?

My Mom keeps telling me that I should not procrastinate, so does my Dad, so does my Uncle, so does my Aunt, and so do I. But I don’t really know about the decision. I do have hidden super-duper ability to complete tasks in a very short amount of time with a significant efficiency. What I need are some motivation and a high pressure. But if it didn’t work very well, and I would have painful experience.

Is procrastination very bad? I don’t think so, at least for me.

That comes my conclusion. Let myself be a guinea pig. This month, I will apply Dr.John Perry’s “Structured Procrastination” philosophy. I hope to get a good progress. Everday I will check my today’s to-do list as well as planning for my next day.

Ready to go!
